With a degree in wildlife management and biology, this former biology teacher worked for Oregon Wild in its earliest days, laboring for years, sometimes without pay, to help get it running. Over time, he’s been a volunteer, a member of the board of directors, a staffer (starting in 1981) with changing titles and duties, and an invaluable resource of organizational memory and conservation expertise.

Now, as Oregon Wild's Wildlands Interpreter Wendell Wood, and he works on a variety of Oregon Wild projects, including Klamath Basin issues, roadless-area campaigns, as well as old-growth forest and natural area preservation.  His primary conservation focus is in southern Oregon.  Wendell is also a skilled naturalist well known for leading fun and educational hikes for the public around the state.  His hikes help people identify what they’re seeing, be it wild mushrooms, birds, or native plants and wildflowers. From season to season Wendell enjoys finding plants and animal life, from the year before.   “It’s kind of like coming back and seeing you old friends again,” he says.

Wendell’s interests include natural history, research and identification of plants and animals, and hiking.
