Call the Senators for Mount Hood

Time is running out and we need your help. Future generations of Oregonians need your help.

The Senate is about to vote on a major package of public lands bills. This package contains over 90 bills, including several that will protect critical areas in Oregon.

Mount Hood ActionWe need to mobilize now to make sure this bill passes. That means we need everyone to pick up the phone and take two minutes to call Oregon's Senators Gordon Smith and Ron Wyden.

An obstructionist Senator from Oklahoma, Tom Coburn, is trying to recruit votes to stop this essential legislation. Oregon's Senators, specifically Senator Gordon Smith, can stop him from doing this and we need to let Smith know that now is the time to use his influence and get his colleagues on board.

WHY WE CARE

  • Oregonians have worked hard for years to protect high priority areas all across the state. The current legislation includes:
  • Lewis and Clark Mount Hood Wilderness Act: protects wildlife habitat, carbon sequestering forests and clean drinking water in the Gorge and on the slopes of Mount Hood.
  • Copper Salmon Wilderness: protects one of the last intact watersheds on the southern Oregon coast that is home to healthy runs of wild winter steelhead, fall Chinook, coho salmon and sea-run cutthroat trout.
  • Soda Mountain Wilderness: protects one of the most important wildlife corridors in Oregon, linking the Cascades and the Klamath Mountains.
  • Spring Basin and Badlands Wilderness: protects wildlife habitat, high desert wildflowers and ancient juniper trees near Bend and along the John Day River.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Call Senators Smith (503-326-3386) and Wyden (503-326-7525) and let them know you strongly support the public lands package (bill # 3213) and urge them to ensure Oregon's natural areas are protected this year.

Politicians who have never even seen Mount Hood and don't care about Oregon's natural heritage are attempting to stop this bill.

Senator Smith can make sure his Republican colleagues step aside and let this overwhelmingly popular piece of legislation pass. He needs to hear from you that now is the time to stand up for Oregonians. Call him at (503) 326-3386
