About the Hike
One of the nicest old growth redwood areas remaining in Oregon, with interesting individual trees including a large hollowed out tree you can look into and step inside of.
The Dirt
As recently as the 1990’s, the US Forest Service regarded 9,483 of Oregon’s remaining 14,000 redwood forest acres as "lands available for timber harvest." Objections to planned timber sales by Oregon Wild, and protections later afforded for the area's threatened northern spotted owls, marbled murrelets, and coho salmon have so far kept most of Oregon's remaining old growth redwood groves from being logged.
Getting There
From Brookings, take Hwy 101 south to Curry County Road 896 (Winchuck Road) for 1.5 mile. Turn right on a bridge crossing the Winchuck River onto Forest Service Road 1101. The trailhead is located at the end of the road.
Always confirm accessibility to trails prior to departure.
