What you take will depend on where you are going and how long you plan to be away, but any backpack should include the following:
  • Map and compass
  • Waterproof matches
  • Pocket knife
  • Extra clothing (wool or fleece – no cotton!)
  • Extra socks
  • Rain gear
  • Hat
  • First aid kit
  • Water (you should consume from two to four quarts of water per day)
  • High-energy food and snacks (even on a short trip, pack several energy bars just in case)
  • Flashlight
  • “Space blanket” or a piece of plastic (to use for warmth or shelter)
  • Insect repellent
  • Trash bags (for emergency shelter from the rain or for cleaning up garbage)
