How to plan a safe and enjoyable trip

Tips for making your next outdoor adventure safe and fun.

Canoeing Upper Klamath Lake Hiking trips, whitewater floats, and fishing excursions are all great ways to get outdoors and enjoy wild Oregon. But before you leave home, make sure you are prepared. The following checklists can help make sure your next outdoor adventure is a safe and happy experience.

Before you leave home:

  • Make sure you have a good map of your intended destination, and the ability to use it and a compass.
  • Let a friend or family member know where you are going and when you plan to be back.
  • For hiking and backpacking trips, make sure you have sturdy boots or shoes that are completely broken in.
  • For fishing and boating, make sure you and all of your companions can swim and have proper safety gear. Wear your life jacket!
  • Review your outdoor equipment checklist and make sure you have the basic items to deal with an emergency in the outdoors.
  • Be sure you have a first aid kit in case of an emergency.
  • Though you will hopefully never need them, first aid skills are important. The American Red Cross offers excellent first aid classes in your community.
