Wood River and Agency Lake Wetlands

A description of access and activities at Wood River and Agency Lake Wetlands, by Wendell Wood.

The easily accessed Wood River Wetlands is a great place to hike or bike.   For convenience, there is a picnic table and outhouse facility at the trailhead.  Begin walking or biking to the west on a dike for about .75 mile and you will reach the Wood River. This spot provides open expanses with birding view points.  From here you can continue on a 10 mile loop on the first dike to the right (north), or west along the edge of Agency Lake, with thousands of acres of restored marsh on your right.  This is a great place to see a great number of birds during the spring, particularly waterfowl, shorebirds, hawks and bald eagles.  In the fall, during waterfowl hunting season, the viewing opportunities are reduced at this location.  Walking the first mile along this cottonwood tree lined dike is a very good place to see colorful warblers and other (less often seen) birds such as northern shrikes, orioles etc., particularly during the spring and fall migrations.

From Hwy. 97 turn off for Chiloquin (.75 mile south of the 247 mile post).  Drive west (opposite Chiloquin to the east) for another 3 miles.  Cross Hwy. 62 and continue .1 mile where you are forced to turn either right or left.  Go left (south) following the sign for Klamath Falls and Modoc Point.  Continue just over a mile and beyond the 2 mile post, turn right into BLM’s Wood River Wetlands.   Walk out the dike to the west along an existing marsh.  In a half mile you cross a bridge over the Wood River, with the “reclaimed” marsh beyond.

Just before BLM’s Wood River Wetlands turn off (described above) is Klamath County’s Petric Park where there is a more developed boat launch.  At BLM’s Wood River Wetlands facility you will need to carry your canoe a few yards more to a launching dock beside the marsh.   Both facilities provide an outhouse with a boat and canoe launch, and wind through a beautiful area of natural marsh before entering the north end of Agency Lake along a diked edge. See this link for more information

In a canoe you now have two options.  Either head to the left (south), under a bridge, and directly to “Mallard Marsh” around the edge of Agency Lake, at the mouth of the Wood River.  The other option is to canoe or kayak to the right, up the Wood River channel, paddling north.  As the marsh narrows you can continue up the Wood River along a willow lined channel.  The land over the dike to the west is former cattle pasture restored as a 3,000 acre marsh by BLM.

Other areas to consider for exploration include the canoe trail in Upper Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, on the extreme west side of Upper Klamath Lake.  There are also two islands in Klamath Lake, Bare Island (east of Eagle Pt.) and Buck Island (on the extreme southern end). Both are more involved boat trips, where you need to be aware that large waves that come up on the lake suddenly due to unexpected strong winds.
