(If significant rain is forecast the day before, hike will be postponed one day to Thursday, October 23.)

A four mile round trip, with a 500 ft. elevation gain to  primitive “Herman Camp” in the proposed Columbia Gorge Wilderness Area.   The Herman Creek area is one of the major old growth forest areas contained in roadless areas of the Columbia River Gorge.  The great Columbia Fire of 1902 and subsequent smaller fires burned most of the ancient forest in the Columbia River Gorge, leaving only remnant stands of old trees throughout the gorge.

While the first part of this trail passes though mostly mature aged forests, old growth Douglas fir trees become the norm just before you reach a plateau (and primitive tenting site) called “Herman Camp” in approximately 2 miles from the frontage road along Interstate 84.

(Hike leader: Wendell Wood -- Difficulty: Moderate -- Distance: 4 miles -- Elevation gain/loss: 500 ft.)

Act Now!

Some of Oregon's treasures recently came one step closer to permanent protection with introduction of legislation to protect Wilderness around Mt. Hood, Wild and Scenic tributaries of the Rogue River, and the Oregon Caves Monument. But Senator Smith's support is needed to keep the Rogue wild! Let him know we need his help to save the Wild Rogue!

Do you know...
Which state has protected the largest percentage of its land as Wilderness?
 Oregon
 California
 Washington
