Join Oregon Wild’s Wildlands Interpreter Wendell Wood for a weekend field trip to southern Oregon and northern California’s Klamath Basin – the Heart of the Pacific Flyway.

Indoor cooking and sleeping accommodations provided at Oregon Wild’s unofficial south-central field station (4,500 feet elevation) adjacent to the Klamath Marsh National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). The cabin is located (as the crow flies) immediately east of Crater Lake National Park and is near the Fremont-Winema National Forest.

On Saturday, October 29 the group will travel south of Klamath Falls to view waterfowl and other birds on Lower Klamath and Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuges.

Sunday, we’ll explore the edges of the Klamath Marsh NWR and (for those wishing to) rise early in hopes of finding a Great Grey Owl.

Waterfowl and bird identification will be the emphasis of this Klamath Basin trip hosted by Oregon Wild’s Wildlands Interpreter, Wendell Wood.

Arrive at Wendell’s cozy cabin no later than Friday evening, October 28.  Early Saturday, October 29 we will carpool to south of Klamath Falls to view waterfowl and other birds along Upper Klamath Lake and then Lower Klamath and other area refuges.  On Saturday evening we will eat at a varied menu Vietnamese restaurant in Klamath Falls, and return to the cabin (one hour-plus drive) after dark. Saturday’s bird trip will be largely a driving tour to a variety of different birding locations in the lower basin, south of Klamath Falls.

Sunday will be a hiking (and birding) day around the Klamath Marsh NWR, or along the Williamson River, and to possibly try to find the elusive Great Gray Owl at the crack of dawn on Sunday morning.  Guests return home on Sunday afternoon.

Early morning temperatures are likely to be below freezing, but may warm into the mid-50s during the day.  Limited to 12 participants.

Please come fully self-contained.  Bring binoculars, bird book, warm clothes, sleeping bag and pad (limited beds and mattresses available), food (except for Saturday night), hiking shoes, and – if you have them - walkie talkies for better birding communication between cars.  Bring a cooler to store food & beverages (in shed off the kitchen). The cabin contains full kitchen facilities, 2 restrooms, and we will supply plates, pans, cooking oil, etc.  There are 5 double beds, one futon pad, and two couches downstairs.   Thus be sure to bring a pad for sleeping if coming singly.
