Hike a well-loved trail along beautiful Brice Creek and to the Upper Trestle Creek Falls for a picnic and forest exploration.
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 4.0 miles
Elevation Gain: 1,000 feet
Location: Umpqua National Forest, outside Cottage Grove
The Brice Creek trail, with its rocky banks and towering trees, is the perfect place to spend a summer evening. We’ll hike up to Upper Trestle Falls – taking in a lovely old forest, moss-covered maples and fern-covered rock walls. The Lower Falls is a worthy side trip, ending in a green grotto at the base of another waterfall.
The Brice Creek roadless area, and nearby Northnoon Ridge roadless area, have been threatened and impacted by old-growth logging in the recent past. In the late 1990s battles raged over the Blodgett and Northnoon Timber Sales - both in old-growth forests containing sensitive species.
Unfortunately, these forests were logged. The Wyatt Timber Sale, on the northeast side of the roadless area, was stopped. Sensitive wildlife were found in the forest and the logging plan was held up for years. In late 2005, the Forest Service made the wise decision to drop plans to log this area and instead focus on thinning plantations elsewhere in the Cottage Grove Ranger District.
