Head up to explore wildflowers at Mount Hood’s largest meadow with a detour to look out over proposed Wilderness at Bluegrass Ridge.
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 7.0 miles
Elevation Gain: 1,200 feet
Leader: Sean Stevens
Location: Mount Hood National Forest
Elk Meadows is a favorite destination for wildflower photographers – the perfect spot to capture beautiful blooms with the rising Mount Hood as a back drop. The area has long been protected as Wilderness, but the adjacent Bluegrass Ridge was left out of the 2009 Lewis and Clark Mount Hood Wilderness bill.
On this mid-summer hike, we’ll head up from the trailhead near Mount Hood Meadows ski area and start heading up. We’ll cross Clark and Newton Creeks and make our way to the meadow with a side trip to check out the proposed Wilderness at Bluegrass Ridge.
Bring the camera, some water, and an appetite for grand scenery for this hike.
