Experience the hike around Clear Lake – the incomparable headwaters of the McKenzie River – in all its autumn splendor. And make a stop to hopefully view spawning salmon nearby.
Level: Easy to Moderate
Distance: 5.5 miles
Elevation Gain: 200 feet
Leader: Chandra LeGue
Location: Willamette National Forest
Fed by lava-filtered glacial melt-water, Clear Lake is one of Oregon’s most spectacular geological features. Vine maples and other shrubs – colorfully touched by cool autumn nights and set against a backdrop of jagged lava flows – are only one of the highlights of this hike.
Source of the beautiful McKenzie River and Eugene’s drinking water, Clear Lake’s deep blue water, ghostly flooded forest, and ancient surrounding forest should draw all ages to explore its shores.
We’ll also make a stop at the spawning area below Carmen Reservoir to hopefully see some salmon making their fall migration to their home stream.
