There are few places in the world that can match the diversity, oddity, and beauty of the plants in the Rough and Ready botanical area. Join Oregon Wild to experience this unique and wondrous place. (Special camping option available the night of May 21)
Level: Moderate
Distance: 3-4 miles
Elevation Gain: minimal
Leader: Wendell Wood
Location: Rogue-Siskiyou National Forest (outside Grants Pass)
Rough and Ready Creek and the surrounding wildlands have long been known to plant lovers as one of the best places to see rare flora.
On this two part hike, we will initially follow a gravel path upstream to explore the area north of the parking area. We’ll return to the a picnic table by noon for lunch. In the early afternoon we will drive another 3 miles to hike one mile into the roadless area (and proposed Wilderness Area) of the Rough and Ready Canyon further upstream.
Hiking will total about 3+ miles with mostly, easy level terrain, but with some rock hopping along Rough and Ready Creek in the afternoon.
A comprehensive plant list, for reference, of all of the species identified in the Rough and Ready Creek watershed, with scientific and common names, will be provided to participants.
RSVP for the hike. (Oregon Wild members ($6) and non-members ($9). All proceeds from hikes support Oregon Wild’s campaigns to protect wildlands across the state.)
If you are unsure if your Oregon Wild membership is current, please call 503.283.6343 x 224. To join, please click here.
A Saturday night (May 21) camping option is available for those who are interested for an extra $5. Details available upon signing up for the hike. This hike is paired with the Rogue River Hike on May 22.
