Hike through new Wilderness additions to the western most end of the Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness Area.
Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 4-5 miles
Elevation Gain: 800 feet
Leader: Wendell Wood
Location: Mount Hood National Forest
(*Please keep the following day, Sun. Oct. 23 open in case of inclement weather)
This will be a moderate, 4 to 5 mile round trip, mushroom and plant identification hike into newly designated Wilderness as well as to the existing Salmon Huckleberry Wilderness Area--north east of Estacada. (This area is not to be confused with the “other” (better known) Eagle Creek in the Columbia River Gorge).
Beginning on an old log road, gradually descend 800 feet to a mostly flat trail, just above Eagle Creek. After a mile we enter an outstanding old growth forest now forever protected as a mushroom haven (and more) by Wilderness legislation passed in March 2009. We will return the same way we came in.
Sign up for the hike here. (Sign up includes an evening instructional presentation with naturalist Wendell Wood on the evening of Tuesday, October 18th.)
