Hunt for mushrooms beneath towering old growth groves on Larch Mountain in the Columbia River Gorge.

Larch Mountain’s crater and the adjacent Multnomah Basin (above Multnomah Falls) contain some of the largest, oldest and most accessible groves of ancient western hemlock and Douglas fir anywhere in the Columbia River Gorge. Big old western red cedars also line much of Multnomah Creek and occasional moss and vine maple covered basalt outcrops add to the area’s diversity.
This is a moderate, 3 mile round trip hike to the Multnomah Creek old-growth grove and marsh/meadow in the upper crater basin of Larch Mountain. Beginning at just under 3,000 ft. elevation, this hike will gain just over 200 feet elevation before then dropping 450 feet to old growth groves along side Multnomah Creek.
