Elevation Gain: 500 feet
Leader: Wendell Wood
Location: Mount Hood National Forest

(*Please keep the following day, Tues. Oct. 25 open in case of inclement weather)

A four mile round trip, with a 500 ft. elevation gain to primitive “Herman Camp” in the newly expanded Columbia Gorge Wilderness Area.  The Herman Creek area is one of the major old growth forest locales contained in the roadless forests of the Columbia River Gorge.  The great Columbia Fire of 1902 and subsequent smaller fires burned most of the ancient forest in the Columbia River Gorge, leaving only remnant stands of old trees throughout the gorge.

While the first part of this trail passes though mostly mature aged forests, old growth Douglas fir trees become the norm just before you reach a plateau (and primitive tenting site) called “Herman Camp” in approximately 2 miles from the frontage road along Interstate 84.

Sign up for the hike here. (Sign up includes an evening instructional presentation with naturalist Wendell Wood on the evening of Tuesday, October 18th.)
