An Oregon Wild Wednesday Presentation

Getting Beyond the Wolf Wars

As wolves return to Oregon, writer and ecologist George Wuerthner presents lessons learned from 15 years of wolf recovery in the northern Rockies.

For wolves, wolf advocates, and wolf recovery opponents these are interesting times. Across the northern Rockies region, stakeholders await the decision of a Montana judge who holds the fate of endangered gray wolves in his hands. In Oregon, for the first time in five years, the wolf management plan is under review. In March, the cover of National Geographic Magazine was emblazoned with the headline “Wolf Wars.”

Join Oregon Wild on April 14, for a Wild Wednesday presentation on wolf recovery in Oregon and across the west. Our guest presenter is George Wuerthner, the Ecological WolfProjects Director for the Foundation for Deep Ecology. Wuerthner is a photographer and writer who has published 35 books including Oregon Mountain Ranges, Oregon Wilderness Areas, and Wildflower Hikes in Oregon. More recently, he served as editor and contributor to two large-format books: Wildfire: A Century of Failed Forest Policy and Thrillcraft: the Environmental Consequences of Motorized Recreation.

Wuerthner has been involved in wolf recovery efforts for decades. In the 1980s he worked with the Wolf Ecology Project by Glacier National Park when wolves were first colonizing that part of Montana. In the early 1990s he helped promote wolf restoration efforts in Yellowstone. In the mid 1990s, after moving to Oregon, he wrote a paper on the potential for wolf recovery in Oregon. Wuerthner continues to be involved in wolf restoration efforts and will present on basic wolf ecology and new insights about the ecological role of wolves as an apex predator. He will discuss the potential for wolf restoration in Oregon and lessons learned from wolf recovery in the Rockies.

Following Wuerthner’s presentation, Roadless Wildlands Advocate Rob Klavins will present on Oregon Wild efforts to protect the big wild places that wolves and other species rely on for survival. For 35 years, Oregon Wild has worked to protect the last pristine and unroaded areas of our National Forests. With over half of our National Forests open to mining, logging, and other development, this roadless backcountry is becoming harder to find.
