Oregon Wild Internships

Founded in 1974, Oregon Wild is a non-profit conservation organization that works to protect and restore the wildlands, wildlife, and waters that make our state such a special place. Our primary campaign areas include Wilderness and wildlife as well as restoration and protection of Oregon’s forests, rivers, lakes, and wetlands.

This internship provides an opportunity to gain valuable work experience in a conservation advocacy organization while also supporting the critical mission of Oregon Wild.

Wilderness Outreach Intern

General Responsibilities:

Wilderness Outreach Support – 40%

  • This internship will support the work of Oregon Wild’s Wilderness Campaign Organizer in growing support for increased Wilderness protections in Oregon. The primary campaign will be the Crater Lake Wilderness though the scope of work will overlap other campaigns. This internship will include field trips to proposed Wilderness areas and gateway communities. Outreach will include tabling, attending public gatherings and supporting Oregon Wild events.
  • The intern will also be responsible for writing Wilderness area and hike descriptions. This includes considerable time dedicated toward creating and maintaining web site and blog content in support of Oregon Wild’s Wilderness campaigns.

Campaign Organizing Support- 25%

  • Work with the Wilderness Campaign Organizer to identify activists in the Portland metro region. This will include research and supporting outreach to businesses, outdoor recreation clubs, botanical groups and other potential supporters.
  • The intern will help garner petitions and postcards through trailhead advocacy, and help generate sign on letters, and letters to the editor.

Program and general administrative support – 35%

  • Support the day to day operations of Oregon Wild and its Wilderness campaigns.  This includes representing the organization at events and providing general office support such as answering phones, assisting with mailings, and distribution of educational materials.
  • Depending on start date, this position would help support last minute planning and day of activities for the Oregon Wilderness Conference on May 15 and 16.
  • Support development staff with grant and membership management as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications:
A demonstrated passion for Wilderness and the conservation of America’s public lands is mandatory.  The ideal candidate must be able to take direction well, be able to take initiative, and be able to work independently when needed.  Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and their own transportation.
Experience writing for social media, web sites, blogs and similar electronic publications is a plus.  Students studying in the areas of environmental policy, communications, and government, as well as those looking to pursue a career in conservation and/or advocacy, are strongly encouraged to apply.

Compensation:
This internship is unpaid, however, it may be tailored to meet requirements for academic credit. 

Work Schedule:
20-40 hours per week, flexible schedule. Preference given to candidates that can start in early to mid-May. Position would be based out of our Portland office.
