Conservation Group Suspects Recent Wolf Death was Poaching
Federal wildlife agency yet to confirm killing.
The conservation group Oregon Wild has condemned what they suspect is the poaching of a federally-protected wolf in north eastern Oregon.
The 2 year old male was a member of the Wenaha Pack wearing a radio collar. It was found dead last Thursday by an Oregon Fish and Wildlife staffer. Recently, ranchers in northeast Oregon have blamed wolves for attacking their livestock. Sean Stevens with Oregon Wild says the problem has been blown out of proportion.
Sean Stevens: "There is a very vocal minority that believes wolves to be the problem for pretty much all of their ills. And, unfortunately it leads to a scenario where you have an atmosphere that people feel that it's okay for them to break the law and to kill an endangered animal."
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating. Officials with the agency have not been forthcoming with details on how the wolf was killed.
