Proposed Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement could be in jeopardy

Claims of open government violation may stymie settlement deal.

The proposed Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement could be in jeopardy.

This, due to a potential violation of Oregon law that some allege took place during the nearly 3-year negotiating period that led to the proposal.

The law in question is under the Oregon revised statutes.

It reads in part: "All negotiations in which the director participates under this section shall be open to the public."

The law also states that the director must provide the public with regular reports on the progress of the negotiations.

But the negotiations were NOT open to the public and no progress reports were made public while negotiations were taking place, as the law stipulates.
