Eugene Conservation Technology Intern

Do you love Oregon’s wildlands and wildlife? Do you want to protect the things that make our state special for future generations? Do you have skills in database and web development, mapping, or graphic design? This internship with Oregon Wild might be just right for you!

This 3 to 4 month internship based in Eugene will focus on a variety of technology-based conservation program support projects, and can be somewhat tailored to the interests and skills of the selected intern.

General Responsibilities:

  • Conservation Database & Mapping Support – 50%

Update and improve Filemaker Pro database to better serve conservation staff needs. Use mapping and GIS tools to develop system for mapping public lands management activities and integrate into Oregon Wild monitoring efforts.

  • Outdoor Program Support – 50%

Develop web based hike information pages and integrate into Oregon Wild website. Generate informational brochures for our outdoor program, including researching natural history and trail information for specific areas, and writing and laying out brochures.

Minimum qualifications:

Oregon Wild staff, interns, and volunteers care deeply about and work hard to protect Oregon’s wildlands, wildlife, and waters. We also make sure to enjoy our work and the values we seek to protect.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a demonstrated interest and academic or practical foundation in a related field. The candidate must be able to take direction and work with a team, but also be able to take initiative, work independently, and be self-directed. Experience with database technology and systems is desired. Working knowledge and experience using ArcGIS web-based mapping tools and software is also desired. Experience with basic graphic design software and an eye for design and editing detail are preferred.

Students studying in the areas of geography, public policy, computer science, environmental studies, or environmental science, as well as non-students looking to pursue a career in conservation are encouraged to apply, so long as they have the required skills.

Compensation:
This internship is UNPAID, however, it may be tailored to meet requirements for academic credit. 

Work Schedule:
20+ hours per week, flexible schedule. Internship dates can be flexible between mid-May and mid-September.

Work Environment:
The internship is based in Oregon Wild’s Eugene office at 1238 Lincoln Street. There are three Oregon Wild staff in this office, and there may be another intern working there this summer as well. This position’s supervisor is Chandra LeGue, Western Oregon Field Coordinator. Dress is casual but neat.
